How admission to a NIT works
Admission is on the JEE Main (Paper 1) All India Rank. JoSAA allots the seats in several rounds; seats still vacant after that are filled in the CSAB special rounds. You also need 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC, ST and PwD candidates) or a place in the top 20 percentile of your board.
As a rule, half the seats in an NIT programme are Home State (HS) seats, for candidates who passed Class 12 in the state where the NIT is. The other half are Other State (OS) seats, for everyone else. The two pools have their own closing ranks, so check the one that applies to you.
Inside each pool there are seats for OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS and PwD candidates and a separate female-only pool.
Official sites: JoSAA and CSAB. Rules can change each year, so read the current business rules before you fill your choices.
