How admission to an IIT works
Every IIT admits B.Tech students on the JEE Advanced rank. Only candidates who rank high enough in JEE Main Paper 1 can sit JEE Advanced.
Seats are allotted by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) in several rounds, on your All India Rank and the order of the choices you fill. You also need 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC, ST and PwD candidates) or a place in the top 20 percentile of your board.
IITs have no home-state quota: every seat is in the All India pool, with seats reserved for OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS and PwD candidates and a separate female-only pool in each programme.
Official sites: JoSAA. Rules can change each year, so read the current business rules before you fill your choices.
